The 2007 TL is an important vehicle to Acura for the sedan market segment. The Type-S is a member of a series of two trim levels for the TL which include Base and Type-S. The four-door car with its front-wheel drive is positioned to aggressively fill this niche for Acura. There is strong competition from vehicles from Honda.

In 2002 Acura released the TL Base to the car-buying market. The TL came in two configurations: Base and Type-S. The Base configuration is powered by the 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine, which makes 29 highway miles and 19 city. The TL competes in the Sedan market segment, in direct competition with Kia.
